T is for T-scores

When you have a bone density scan one of the results you get is your T-score. This is the difference between your measurement and that of a healthy young adult (for women that’s usually a healthy 25-year-old).

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies T scores as follows:

– above -1 SD is normal

– between -1 and -2.5 SD is defined as mildly reduced bone mineral density (BMD) compared with peak bone mass (PBM)

– at or below -2.5 SD is defined as osteoporosis

Very few people have a bone scan at the age of 25 so we can’t compare our own results with ourselves as we get older. Maybe it would be a good idea?
